Una nefasta concezione d'Europa

Il mito dell’ “Europa” come stella polare verso cui l’Italia dovrebbe volgersi senza “se” né “ma”, se vuole uscire dalle tenebre di oggi verso un domani ben più luminoso, ha fatto ancora una volta la propria ricomparsa sulla scena politica italiana.

Uno dei nuovi gruppi parlamentari d’opposizione che si sono formati negli ultimi giorni l’ha messo al centro del proprio programma. Alla sua radice c’è l’idea ricorrente secondo cui l’Italia non è un “paese normale” per due motivi: perché non avendo accolto la Riforma protestante si è perciò stesso preclusa alla modernità; e perché la presenza della Santa Sede a Roma costituisce un’enorme ball and chain because of which even today our country is able to recover the time lost so far.

I danni causati da questa ideologia, il cui influsso va ahimè anche ben oltre le file dell’attuale opposizione, sono notevolissimi. Basti citare un caso, quello di Prodi, che ne è imbevuto. L’ingresso in ginocchio dell’Italia nell’euro con un tasso di cambio molto sfavorevole, e a condizioni che ci sono costate la perdita di circa metà del nostro potere d’acquisto in dieci anni, nasce da qui. E’ un’ideologia nefasta che, magari anche inconsapevolmente, riappare ogni volta che un ministro ci viene a dire che una certa cosa si deve fare perché “ce lo chiede l’Europa”, oppure che se non la si fa si corre il rischio di “uscire dall’Europa”.

Il primo argomento è una furbizia di tipo neo-autoritario, ma il secondo è sintomo di un complesso d’inferiorità patetico. Senza l’Italia l’Europa non ci sarebbe nemmeno; non solo perché è uno dei Paesi fondatori delle istituzioni europee, ma soprattutto perché ne è la culla culturale e storica. Perciò in Europa né dobbiamo entrare né possiamo uscire. Se di ciò il nostro ceto politico fosse più consapevole la nostra politica europea sarebbe molto più forte e più influente con vantaggio both our own and the whole Union.
